Heat and Fire-Resistant Thermal Coating For Aircraft and Flight Decks

Inventor — Jerry Smith

Progressive Technologies (ProTK), a Denver VOSB of the inventor, Mr. Jerry Smith, has developed and demonstrated a coating with unprecedented fire and thermal resistant properties that withstood, in testing, temperatures well beyond the capabilities of conventional materials, 1700°F without any heat migration through the coating or ignition of the material.

After extensive formulation and experimentation, ProTK was able to duplicate and enhance the beneficial characteristics of a heat-and fire-resistant coating that drew significant interest from the aerospace industry in the early ‘90s, specifically interest from Boeing’s JSF development program.  Then called Starlite, this revolutionary coating was formulated by a noted thermal dynamics expert, Maurice Ward, but unfortunately Mr. Ward died before divulging his proprietary formula.  ProTK’s coating product, while molecularly different from the assumed Starlite formula, dramatically reduced heat flow through the coating itself to the coated surfaces, as did Starlite.  Initial testing has demonstrated Mr. Smith’s product can resist heat up 1700°F.  In duplicating the public Starlite test, www.youtube.com/watch?v=L8uAwEcHis4, a raw egg surface was coated with Mr. Smith’s formulation and was subjected to an open torch flame for over 5 minutes.  Upon completion, the interior of the egg was still in an uncooked state.

This testing has led to the conclusion that “PrTK’s proprietary coating would be ideal for coating flight deck spots that are subject to V-22 and F-35B engine exhaust heat.”  Thus, further testing – to validate that conclusion and to determine the benefits of such coatings, even on LCS aluminum hulls and on aircraft themselves – is proposed.

About: Jerry has spent a lifetime engaged in the study of magnetism, metallurgy, optics, sound and frequency and their interdependence in the world in which we live.  His insights have contributed to making major advancements in consumer optics, magnetic devices, several automotive enhancements and custom and impenetrable lock systems.  Jerry’s work has been published in Poplar Mechanics, Inventors’ Digest and Dream Merchant.  Jerry holds over 30 US patents, including those related to:

  • Lock system currently used by the Federal Reserve Bank, Fort Knox, The White House and most military and governmental facilities around the world,
  • CD/DVD security disc used for high security encryption by US embassies and government agencies, and featured in the James Bond movie…To Die Another Day
  • Commercial locks, security systems and auto parts sold by AssA-Abloy, Adams-Rite, Securitron and Master Lock.

His recent work has focused on the impact of magnetics in the generation and control of electrical current.  Jerry has been able to accomplish on a small scale, both an etheric power generation and magnetic-harmonic power conversion.   Jerry is well known in the scientific community and has earned recognition for his ground-breaking discoveries.
